Project: Capacity building of three Civil Society Organisations (CSO) working with key populations in HIV & AIDS, Sri Lanka 

Client: Community Strength and Development Foundation (CSDF) – Female Sex Workers; Companions on a Journey (COJ) – Men who have Sex with Men; and Saviya Development Foundation (SDF) – drug users. This CSO capacity building project is implemented by the International Council for Management of Population Programmes (ICOMP) Malaysia, with funding from UNAIDS.  

When: January 2010 -

Project Description: Assist CSOs to develop leadership skills, and better operational processes, monitoring and evaluation systems and financial systems. This participatory approach to organisational and personal development is a strategy employed by ICOMP in South and South East Asia.

Project: Develop BCC for a peer led HIV & AIDS intervention with the Maritime Sector in Sri Lanka.

Client: The National Union of Seafarers Sri Lanka in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO)  Sri Lanka Office, and  the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) regional office.    

When: August – September 2010

Project Description: Conduct consultations with trained peer educators on BCC requirements. Develop and test printed BCC with peer educators and maritime workers. The focus is on unsafe sexual practices, including visiting female sex workers and men who have sex with onboard vessels. The BCC strategies will be piloted at the Colombo port with plans for upscaling across all Sri Lankan ports.

Project: Developing a Peer Led HIV Intervention for the Maritime Sector in Sri Lanka.

Client: National Union of Seafarers in Sri Lanka in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Sri Lanka Office, and  the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) regional office.   

When: March 2010 -

Project Description: Conduct awareness programmes with dockers and seafarers attached to ports in Sri Lanka to disseminate findings of the HIV & AIDS Rapid Situation Assessment and encourage enrollment in the peer education programme. Conduct 10 peer educator training programmes for a maximum of 30 peer educators each covering HIV & STI basics, communication/presentation and referral skills. Put in place a support structure for peer educators with focal points across the maritime sector to discuss challenges and resource needs. Train peer educator team on simple monitoring and evaluation techniques to assess the impact of their intervention.

Project: Training Youth Peer Educators on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in Anuradhapura and Vavuniya Districts, Sri Lanka.

Client: Sarvodaya Shanthi Sena funded by UNFPA Sri Lanka   

When: June 2010 -

Project Description: Conduct sensitization programmes for community leaders and law enforcement; develop peer education modules and strategies in consultation with UNFPA and Sarvodaya teams; implement peer educator training programmes for selected village youth; develop support structure for peer educators and revisit intervention after first phase of two months.
